My Homework from Blossom

Blossom's Homework

Paper carrier bags – OOOOooo love the feel of them and the crinkly, crackly sound they make and the smell of brown paper . . keep all my paper carriers and sneak of and rustle them now and again.

I don't ride, or haven't since I was in my late twenties . .but the sound of creaking saddle leather and the jingle of harness is a wonderful congruent - all is well - sound and the smell of horses is the same ,but in smell language.

I collect sea glass. If I am not crinkling carrier bags then I am moving my sea glass around in their glass bowl just to hear the sound as they touch together and move over each other and the smooth, dusty opaqueness beneath my fingers.

Paper . . . different types of writing paper, printing paper – both for writing and for photographic use. HS has an amazing paper that is linen and floppy . . . sigh . . wonderful just to touch it. All the different types of paper in the shops – hand made paper . . . sigh . . paper and boards in art shops.

The smells of some books when you open them and also the smell of some glossy illustrations. I have a very old book that I won for best handwriting when I was at junior school the smell and feel of that is so special.

I have many pens and the feel of my pens on the different paper is amazing.

Another and deeper love is propelling pencils and Ihave many different shapes and different sized leads. I also have a pad of yellow lined paper – to sit and write on that with my special pencil of the moment is sheer bliss. Faber-Castell are my current favourite – I have a very cheap self propelling pencil which I adore and also a thick leaded art pencil.

Walking in the snow. There are many different types of snow. I love crunching through all of them – although don't like wet snow so much and hate it when I leave slushy imprints as I walk I love the smell of the air when snow is on its way.

Years ago I have a Cockatoo the smell and feel of her feathers was like talc. I also had a Blue and Gold Mackaw. The smell and feel of his feather was also special but so very different from the Cockatoo. Hers was lucious and sweet, his were much more spicy.

Keyboards. Every keyboard is different. I am lucky that my laptop keyboard has 'the' touch. I can't resist nipping round all the different keyboards in PC world . . on a good day when I am allowed out :-)

Before I start writing with pens, pencils, or keyboards I have to cut or trim my finger nails – I feel so creative if they are short and so out of sorts if they are not.

Croissants and coffee on a Sunday morning – especially if I have a 'good' marmalade in. Currently have a honey and orange marmalade . . . wasn't sure at first . . . but it is growing on me . . . so I am off to have shower . . .

The picture is of my collection of sea glass, plus a few shells and stones I like.

Grief, your homework has made me go all tingly! We like so many of the same things! I adore paper too, and lovelovelove writing in pencil.... and i love typing too. I used to collect seaglass and wish I'd kept my collection and added to it. And of course I love my doves, but don't get to touch them often.

As to paper bags - you're mad but we love you! I save them for Christmas cos Yorkie has to have lots of paper bags with little bits of biscuits in as his presents!

Very enlightening - a wonderful insight of your interesting life.

Wasn't sure whether the smell of books you meant the print like on new catalogues! I sit and sniff that like a mad woman!

My cockatiel is lovely and soft and smells of honey. Unfortunately she's totally in love with OH and treats me with utter disdain and bites me when she can.
I love paper too especially that mulberry paper that's in all the shops for cardmaking.

It is so lovely to hear what makes you "tick" thank you for sharing these thing with us, they as so different from the others yet in someways they are similar. I loved getting a new exercise book at school and just smelling the paper before anything had touched it, like a magic trick waiting to be performed, one minute nothing and then well who knows what is to come.

Your seaglass looks fabulous! Real treasure! I like all the things you mention, especially horsey smells and new pencils. Hadn't thought about the keyboard thing, but now you come to mention it...

Anything to do with horses - the sound and smell of the harness the sound of chomping on the bit and also hooves on the road. I agree with Blossom about the new excercise book at school but it was sad too because once it was written in it was spoilt!

I loved your very different list. All those smells and feelings - another we window on WW!

Love the sea glass, I collect it too. Not at all with you on papaer though - I have a slightly weird aversion to it, hate that feel of it on my fingers (not books though!). A really interesting and eclectic list.

Wonderful list of "sounds and "smells" Westerwitch. I too love beautiful writing paper, in London I remember only wanting to use The Three Candlesticks paper, liked the way the edges of paper were not in a straight line, I too have a preference for a special writing pen, still like to dip it in ink, and blot with paper, but I have lost mine recently, so will be getting a new one.

The sounds of crisp white snow under foot, quite something I agree.

Caught your post in the forum and have just read your blogs about the fire. I am relieved for you that it all worked out in the end but what a horrendous experience. Your poor daughter as well having to come back to it. Fire can be so beautiful in the right circumstances something we all love and cheers us up and yet cause such devastation.

On a lighter side sort of (we laugh now because he was safe) no 2 son had a near miss when he set the alter cloth on fire in church whilst he was sat underneath the Alter (not during the service I hasten to add)we were all having coffee). Think he was trying to do one of the scenes from the last Starwars film when they make a funeral pyre ironically.

Anyway keep at it with the NO SMOKING. Glad you and HS were able to work it all out and missed the phoyo of your car and can't see it here but glad it is helping with the SS. BiL has to drive 4x4 because of back probs, his brother has angiospongenitus ( no idea how to spell that and I won't tell you what the spell check is coming up with but certainly not the word I'm looking for)but Bil won't get himself tested, doesn't want to know.

Woops that was a long comment even by my standards.

I too share so many of those sensory loves. I used to have a full set of Caren Dache colour pencils - they were my pride and joy. The smell and feel of leather tack - mmmm wonderful. Love your sea glass

That was a lovely and interesting list of sensory loves...
Delightful to read about and gives me such an insight into what you like...very like me, often the simple things in life.
You sound very 'chilled' in this blog-lovely stuff.

Just left a messg on the previous one as catching up. Sorry you have been feeling so out of sorts...and hope they get you sorted soon.
But you know what I say; surround yourself with people you love and who love you and BE KIND to yourself...give yourself permission to do the things you like to do...and lots of time out for little treats.
And do you know, WW, I think thee and me might just be getting there...

warm wishes
xx

Brilliant list! I love paper too and horsey smells and 2B pencils (but not propelling ones - far too technical!). You're spot on about keyboards too, and sea glass. I've never met a cockatoo at close quarters, but I do have a soft spot for the feathers on my ducks, so I know where you're coming from!

I seem to be last as usual, but this is a lovely list. Propelling pencils, walking on snow and marmalade are my favourites. Love your sea glass, too. I've often picked up pieces on the beach and tried to persuade myself that they are emeralds and rubies washed overboard from a Spanish galleon. (I have the bloated imagination of a four-year old).

As for your last blog - it's all right. I didn't read it - so I know absolutely nothing at all about you smoking. It does sound as though you made a good decision about the panto though. As you say every society has its ructions. Ours is really too small to stay in business, but we battle on. Why, I ask myself? I am so glad you love drama, though. And so glad that PC has helped your creative spirit. I know it has helped me - but all the same it is you that should be being thanked, not us.

No smoking now, or Fennie will come chasing round with some really evil smelling air freshner.
And as for the course - can't you ring them up and hassle them and say you know that someone is bound to be dropping out if not on day one then by week 3 and so if you come along on a provisional basis you will be simply helping them to keep the course full and earn government brownie points. Good luck!

Apart form thinking this wonderful, reading this blog has really helped me! Yes, I can now confess that I am a sea glass collector and have been all my life. Family and friends think I'm bonkers and so I have small bags of it secreted all over the house, in boxes, in cupbaords, in suitcases. It's comes from all over the world - the Far East, South Africa, Canada, Mexico (Pacific side), and even Hawaii. Brought in through the green channel of course but with great guilt...now though I can start to hold my head up high!
